It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of plastic bottles end up in the ocean each year. Klean, a Malaysian startup is seeking to address this problem through their reverse vending machines. These can now be found in shopping malls and petrol stations around Kuala Lumpur, where customers are encouraged to recycle their plastic bottles. They then get shopping and fuel discounts in return. Collaborations with other businesses are also underway and potentially they are aiming a vast network of machines to be set up also in Thailand, Singapore and the rest of ASEAN.
